PALESTINA, CANAAN, PROMISED LAND, LAND OF ISRAEL, HOLY LAND

Definition

A country on th eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea, is sacred to Christians, Jews and Mohammedans. Its original name was Canaan, and is also called Promised Land, Land of Israel, Land of Judah, Land of Judea, and the Holy Land. It includes the land on both sides of the Jordan. Torn by conflict, this embattled land has known many boundary and government changes. Palestine had no strong government under the Judges. During the reigns of David and Solomon, it attained its highest prosperity. Visible decay began with the secession of the ten tribes in 975 BC. Assyria crushed the northern kingdom of Israel approximately 720 BC, and Babylon the southern kingdom of Judah, approximately 587 BC. Since that time Palestine has been under foreign rule by the Persions, Greeks, Romans, and Turks.
