PHARISEES

Definition

The most powerful party among the Jews, both in politics and religion in New Testament times. They were opposed to the Roman rule, the Greek-Roman civilization, its paganism and its vices. In religion, they adhered strictly to the letter, but departed from the spirit of the Old Testament. In opposition to the Sadducees, they accepted the doctrine of the resurrection of the body and a future reward or punishment. They insisted on a literal interpretation of the Law and were denounced by John the Baptist and Christ.
